CUS JCT 27 Pres Bray 5
24 January 2013
Fr Godfrey Cup Second Round: CUS 27 Pres Bray 5A very good victory today for our JCT at Terenure Rugby club. Led by captain Sam Butler we ran out comfortable winners where the class of our backs was the telling difference between the two sides. It started well after 2 minutes when a well-worked move off a scrum saw our right-wing Mikey Holloway cross over unopposed for our opening try. Pres came back into the game where their pack especially the loosehead prop and the backrow forced a number of kickable penalties that were missed.
After 20 minutes we scored again when a break up the right saw Mikey Holloway score our second try. We were now on top – good play from our forwards ensured our supremacy. The backrow of Shane Power, Brendan Meehan and Bill Perryman caught the eye while the hard tackling of outhalf James Cox and centres Karl Millar and Mark Dent snuffed out any threat from the Pres Backs.
In the second half a well-worked back move saw full-back Conor Byrne sprint 40 metres to score our third try. His performance throughout the match was very assured. A loose kick from Pres Bray saw Conor Byrne counter-attack from inside his own half, a chip ahead, a kind bounce and try number 4!
The final try was a piece of magic from centre Mark Dent who broke from just outside his 22, sold a dummy and he was through – a long sprint ensued and we were 25 – 0 up. James Cox converted this try to make it 27 points. Pres Bray hit back with a late try but we ended the match camped in their 22.
The performance was a credit to the lads and their coaches – well done to all involved. St Patrick’s Navan who have put in a couple of very good performances so far in the cup await in the next round.
