Bad news today as unfortunately we lost our SCT match to St Andrews (Vinnie Murray Cup First Round). We trailed 6-0 to two early St Andrew’s penalties but owned the rest of the first-half. An excellent performance from our pack saw us dominate both scrum and lineout – Enda Kelly, Luke Trench, Danyal Khan, David Feenan, John Gavin Roberto Macari and Daniel Choi were to the fore. On one occassion we marched over 20 yards up to pitch from a clean catch in the lineout. The performance was more remarkable given that the St Andrew’s pack was man for man bigger than ours.
However we just (to use the parlance of modern rugby) were not clinical enough and time after time St Andrews were able to clear their lines. In fairness St Andrew’s defence was very impressive throughout the game. Max lacken on the wing made a few brave breaks but he was stopped by the resolute St Andrew’s defence.
In the second half St Andrews had more of the possession and their backs came more into the game. Their left-winger scored the only try of the game mid-way through the second-half in a well-worked move. We upped our game and camped in their 22 but we could not convert our chances and we failed to score. The match finished 11-0. Hard luck to all the lads involved – it was a very gutsy performance.
Many thanks to all the students (over 350 went to the game), past pupils and parents who attended the game.
